“Palindrome”

[INTRO]

Hi! I’m Cat Petru, and you’re listening to Sound It Out: A Kids Podcast About Words.

[TODAY’S WORD]

Today’s word is “palindrome.” Let’s sound it out. Pa-lin-drome.

What do you think palindrome means? What images or feelings arise when you hear the word palindrome?

[DISCUSSION]

Palindrome comes from the Greek words palin and dramein. Palin means again and dramein means to run.

A palindrome is a word, phrase or sequence that is the same forward and backward!

[EXPERIENCE & MEANING]

For example, the name Hannah is a palindrome, but only if it’s spelled H-A-N-N-A-H. See! Same forward and backward.

Do you know anyone whose name is a palindrome? Is your name a palindrome?

A silly phrase that is also a palindrome is “a man, a plan, a canal, Panama.” It doesn’t really make sense, but sure enough, if you write it out and read it backwards, it’s still “a man, a plan, a canal, Panama!”

What silly phrases can you come up with that are palindromes?

Numbers can also be palindromes. For example, if you look at a digital clock at 12:21, you’ll see the palindrome 1-2-2-1, same forward and back.

Dates can be palindromes too. Do any of you have birthdays that are palindromes?

Say you were born on April 13, 2014. If you write out your birthday, it would say 4/13/14 - OR- 4-1-3-1-4. Palindrome!

Even simple dates, like February 22, 2022 are palindromes too! The date reads: 2/22/22 or 2-2-2-2-2. Even though it’s all one number, it’s still the same forward and backward.
